Power of One

Earth Rangers’ Power of One show at the Royal Ontario Museum is ready to inspire audiences into action

Once people see a real African serval cat jump eight feet in the air, and are fully absorbed in the savannah with surround sound and high definition video, they’ll be compelled to take the simple actions the Power of One show suggests will make a world of difference for animals and people too.

As of May 16, visitors to the Royal Ontario Museum and the new Schad Gallery of Biodiversity will enter the gallery’s permanent 60-seat Earth Rangers Studio and be inspired by the 15-minute multimedia Power of One show, presented by TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

There are four versions of the show; each one engrosses the audience in a different biosphere and gives people an up-close experience with one of Earth Rangers’ Animal Ambassadors. In addition to the African savannah, the Arctic tundra features a snowy owl, the tropical rainforest of Madagascar features a lemur, and the grasslands of North America features a kestrel.

During their journey to these places, audience members learn about the challenges facing these animals, and as a result make a connection between the negative impact humans have on the environment and the importance of making responsible choices.

To solidify that connection, a video of an Earth Ranger named Sam explains, in a kid-friendly way, the problem as she sees it and helps people in the audience understand how their everyday actions contribute to the problem. Sam uses a balloon metaphor to show a typical kid named Jordan the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) each of us produces on a daily basis.

Using the balloon metaphor, one person’s daily GHG can be represented with 300 balloons (50 grams of GHG per balloon). In order to get rid of some of the balloons piling up in the video, Sam, Jordan and a few of their friends think of ways they can modify their daily behaviours to have a positive impact on the environment. The kids clearly demonstrate the responsibility that each of us has to protect nature and how our efforts can be really effective if everyone does their part.

Shows are scheduled to run regularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends.

Earth Rangers is expecting to reach 200,000 kids and their families yearly with the Power of One show, and is thrilled to have the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) as the presenting sponsor. TD FEF is a national organization with a grassroots focus that funds local projects dedicated to preserving the environment.

We plan to continue to increase our reach and inspire close to 350,000 children this year to act with the environment in mind. In order to do that, we need passionate sponsors to come on board. If your organization is interested in sponsoring any of our shows – in schools, at the Royal Ontario Museum and at community events – please get in touch.
